Jose Fernandez Killed

Tragedy strikes the baseball world this Sunday morning:

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, a two-time All-Star and one of the bright, young faces of Major League Baseball, was killed early Sunday in a boating accident in Miami Beach.

“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time,” the Marlins released in a statement.

“All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”

My thoughts go out to his family, friends, teammates, and all of professional baseball.

The Marlins canceled today’s game. Fernandez was schedule to pitch tomorrow against the Mets.

In his first full season back after Tommy John surgery, Fernandez led the majors in strikeouts per nine innings by a full K over second place Robbie Ray. At seasonal age 23, he was still a ways from his peak, and already one of the best in the game. We will not get to see how high he would climb.

It is an unfortunate reminder of the dangers of boating. Two Cleveland Indians pitchers were killed in 1993 in a boating accident.
