Games of the Day

The Blue Jays series at the Yankees continues with two young pitchers on the mound as Aaron Sanchez faces Luis Cessa. Sanchez pitched in his third season, his first as a full-time starter. His career record stands at 22-10 thanks to a 2.78 ERA. He is fascinating due to his ability to successfully pitch to contact. His strikeout rate is reasonable but not high. His walk rate is low. With all the balls in play, his FIP and xFIP are about a run higher than his career ERA. Part of that comes from a very high ground ball rate, but xFIP is supposed to account for that. It would appear he produces rather poor contact.

Cessa stands at 4-0 despite a 4.17 ERA. Two of those wins came in relief, and he pitched better this season as a starter, walking just three batters in 18 innings. The nine home runs allowed in 36 2/3 innings could be a huge problem against the Blue Jays. It is tough to score against him without home runs, however, as 15 of the 23 RBI against him came on home runs (four of those runs were charged to other pitchers).

The best late night game takes place in Seattle where Texas send Martin Perez against James Paxton. Like Sanchez above, batters generate a lot of contact against Perez. Unlike Sanchez, that leads to a high ERA, 4.25 for his career. He pitched poorly in Seattle in his career, where both his walks and home runs are high. Paxton is tough to hit at home, with the opposition producing a .264/.299/.402 slash line this season.

Enjoy!
