The Gausman Improvement

Kevin Gausman pitched another good game for the Orioles on Sunday, and in his last three starts appears to have turned around a poor season. Through June 16th, he posted a 6.60 ERA. In his last three starts, his ERA is 1.50, and he did not allow a run in his last two outings. He improved his walks and home runs allowed, but the biggest difference is the reduction in hits due to the increase in strikeouts. He was averaging 6.5 K per nine over his poor period, 11.0 during his good stretch. He gave up 107 hits in 75 innings previously, and 12 hits in his last 18 innings.

I don’t know if he’s doing anything differently, maybe he just got a better feel for his change up. I was listening to the Orioles radio broadcast driving around yesterday, and they suggested one of Gausman’s problems is that he doesn’t have a breaking ball. He changes speeds, but he doesn’t bend the ball. So if his off-speed pitches are poor, he’s going to get hit.
