Plethora of Pitching

The Royals acquired three pitchers from the Padres on Monday:

The contending Kansas City Royals have acquired three pitchers from the San Diego Padres: starter Trevor Cahill, closer Brandon Maurer and reliever Ryan Buchter.

The Royals sent pitchers Matt Strahm and Travis Wood, minor league infielder Esteury Ruiz and cash to San Diego on Monday. The deal came one week before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Kansas City began the day tied with Tampa Bay for the second AL wild-card spot and 1 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland. The Royals had been looking to bolster their rotation and bullpen, and they did so with one swap.

The Angels rotation is okay. They are right in the middle of the league in terms of average game score, their biggest problem going deep in games. Cahill doesn’t help much there, averaging less than six innings a start. That’s why they needed two relievers, to strengthen their bullpen depth.

The Padres get Strahm, who is on the 60-day DL and wasn’t not pitching well before that, Travis Wood, who owns a 6.91 ERA after posting a 2.95 ERA for the World Champion Cubs, and Ruiz 18 years old and tearing up the rookie league with a .419/.440/.779 slash line. That is the name to watch.
