Injury Tuesday

Two major players were placed in the disabled list on Tuesday. First, the Astros lost Carlos Correa to a thumb injury:

A torn ligament in his left thumb is expected to sideline Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa for six to eight weeks. Correa, on pace for the best season of his three-season career, has been the most productive shortstop in the majors since he made his debut in June 2015.

This is unlikely to hurt the Astros chances of winning the AL East. They are a deep team and have a huge lead in the division, so the Astros can allow Correa to take his time healing, and get him back in time to play some games before the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Phil Hughes of the Twins has a much more severe problem:

The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Phil Hughes on the 60-day disabled list Tuesday with a recurrence of symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.

Hughes underwent season-ending surgery last July to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. A rib that was causing nerve and vascular impingement in his throwing shoulder was removed.

Hughes had been on the DL earlier this year after complaining of a “dead feeling” in his pitching shoulder. He is 4-3 with a 5.87 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) for the Twins this season.

This very well may be career threatening. I wish him a quick recovery.
