Games of the Day

Everyone loves the Diamondbacks at the Reds, as Robbie Ray takes on Sal Romano. Ray’s 2.97 ERA is built on one very strong leg of the three-true outcomes, as he struck out 141 batters in 106 innings. That has led to him allowing just 77 hits. That low hit rate makes up for his 52 walks allowed. He also managed to limit 12 of his 14 home runs allowed to situations with the bases empty. Romano makes the third start and appearance of his major league career. His eight K in eight innings is very good, but his five walks and two home runs allowed are not. He showed much better control in the minors.

Bartolo Colon makes his Twins debut as they host the Yankees and Luis Cessa. Cessa has a 1.80 ERA as a reliever, 5.93 as a starter this season. Both are small sample sizes. As a reliever, he allowed a .308/.325/.410 slash line. As a starter, it’s .241/.339/.444, so he walking more batters, giving up fewer hits, but more of the hits are for extra bases. The Braves let Colon go as was no longer a very low walk pitcher. In 2016 he walked 31 batters in 191 2/3 innings. This season he walked 20 batters in 63 innings.

Finally, Clayton Kershaw comes off a long rest to face the White Sox and Miguel Gonzalez. Kershaw needs one walk for 500 issued in his career. That pretty good considering he struck out 2077 batters. Gonzalez pitched much better at home this season, with a 3.98 ERA in Chicago compared to 5.94 on the road.

Enjoy!
