The Analytics Coach

At The Athletic (subscription may be required), Jake Kaplan writes about Sig Mejdal’s unusual second role with the Astros, minor league coach:

“We had such a good learning experience last year, both ways, in terms of the staff learning from Sig and Sig learning from the staff and the players, that we want to continue that,” said Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, who’s never been afraid to buck convention.

Mejdal (pronounced My-dell) won’t be a part of an Astros affiliate’s dedicated staff this season but will instead visit all four of their full-season minor league teams for roughly a week at a time. The organization rolls out new player development initiatives annually, and this year Luhnow wants Mejdal to assist as essentially a roving front office liaison.

Many years ago, Mejdal sent me a paper he wrote on baseball injuries. It was extremely well done, and pointed out that the most probable time for an injury would be right after a player returns from an injury. If there is going to be progress made on limiting injuries, I would expect Mejdal to be in the lead.
