Pinky and the Sprain

Doctors insert three pins into three pins into Madison Bumgarner’s left pinky:

He’s expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Bumgarner was hit in the left hand by a line drive off the bat of Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield during a Cactus League game on Friday, resulting in a fracture of the fifth metacarpal. According to an Associated Press report, manager Bruce Bochy said it would be “a couple months, give or take,” before Bumgarner would be back on the mound for San Francisco.

If the six to eight week time frame holds up, it’s not the end of the world for the Giants. In the best case scenario, the pinky injury causes Bumgarner to put a slightly different spin on the ball that fools batters even more.
