Another Young Millionaire

The Diamondbacks signed Ketel Marte to a long term deal rather than face arbitration with him next season:

Infielder Ketel Marte and the Arizona Diamondbacks finalized a $24 million, five-year contract, a deal that contains a pair of club options that could make the agreement worth $46 million over seven seasons.

The 24-year-old was on track to become eligible for salary arbitration next winter and for free agency after the 2022 season.

Marte gets on base at a good clip, and looks like a solid defender. This deal solidifies one Arizona keystone slot for a number of years.

Meanwhile, Ronald Acuna is said to have rejected a similar deal from the Braves.

Acuna, who is widely considered baseball’s top overall prospect, will start this season in the minor leagues, allowing the Braves to gain an extra year of contractual control over the outfield phenom. It is unclear if Acuna turned down the extension offer before or after Atlanta reassigned him to minor league camp March 19.

It’s been a good week for young players.
