Team Offense, Detroit Tigers

The 2018 series on team offense continues with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers finished tied for eighteenth in the major leagues and tenth in the American League in 2017 with 4.54 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Ron Gardenhire order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

Best lineup: 4.65
Probable lineup: 4.54
Worst lineup: 4.33
Regressed lineup: 4.30

This is not your older sister’s Tigers offense. While it’s not unusual for the LAT to put Miguel Cabrera at the top of the order, Jose Iglesias looks out of place batting third.

There is some hope. Jeimer Candelario‘s projection is highly regressed toward the MLB average. He did a good job getting on base in the minors, and continued that with his short stints in the majors. Dixon Machado also has some upside. They are not enough to turn Detroit back into a power house, but at least there is some young blood in the lineup. I’m not expecting too much from this group.

You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.
