Zack Greinke may have figured out pitching in Arizona. He pitched a three-hit shutout at home Tuesday night as the Diamondbacks beat the Rays 5-0. Greinke walked two and struck out two, as he let Tampa Bay put the ball in play:
“It was just good location. Balls were hit toward guys and there was good defense,” Greinke said. “Everything was working tonight.”
…
“He’s been rolling,” said Arizona manager Chip Hale. “I think it’s pretty simple. His stuff is good down in the zone. Early on he was overthrowing pitches.”
So instead of throwing too hard and watching balls leave the park, Greinke hit his spots and saw balls wind up in the gloves of his fielders. Long-term, I suspect he’ll find a way to strike out batters in Arizona, but he may have turned a corner here.
