The Tough Tenth

No pitcher seems to be able to break into double digits in wins this season. Chris Sale and Stephen Strasburg could not cross the threshold on Saturday, and Jake Arrieta was stymied on Sunday. Once again, he pitched well, but his offense could not push across many runs, and the Cubs fell to the Diamondbacks 3-2. Arrieta struck out 12 of the 23 batters he faced, but he also allowed nine hits in five innings and ran his pitch count high. The Cubs bullpen did their job, keeping Arizona off the board, but it wasn’t enough. Arrieta records his first lost since 7/25/2015, and Jake’s ERA rises to 1.80.

Chris Herrmann collected three hits for Arizona. Playing more regularly than he did with Minnesota, Herrmann owns a .293/.353/.554 slash line for the season.
