Games of the Day

Two good pitchers off to poor starts square off in Chicago as Gerrit Cole takes on Kyle Hendricks as the Pirates play the Cubs. Cole’s strikeout rate is down as he only fanned six batters in 11 innings, leading to 15 hits. Three of those left the yard, and for his career, home run prevention was a staple of Cole’s pitching. Hendricks walked one and struck out six in his first six innings, but the surprising Brewers hit two homers against him as he allowed four runs. Hendricks also tends not to allow home runs.

The Orioles try to make it 4-0 against the hapless (but not Happ less) Blue Jays as Wade Miley faces Aaron Sanchez in Toronto. Miley made an odd start his first time out for Baltimore, allowing one hit in five innings with five strikeouts, but walking seven batters. He did not allow a run. Sanchez pitched seven strong innings against the Rays, but Toronto is just not scoring, and the Jays lost the game in extra innings 3-2.

Houston takes on Oakland as Dallas Keuchel battles Kendall Graveman. Keuchel appears to have fixed his 2016 problems, allowing one run in 14 innings so far this season. He allowed just three walks and a solo home run, as the other three hits off him did no damage. Graveman won both his starts, with 12 K and three walks in 13 innings.

That may not be the duel of the day, however. Zack Greinke leads the Diamondbacks against his former team the Dodgers. Standing in opposition is the greatest pitcher of the teens, Clayton Kershaw. Greinke needed to work on his home run and strikeout rates after a disappointing 2016, and both of those are going in the right direction so far this season. Batters are squaring up the ball relatively well against Kershaw. He allowed 10 hits in 13 innings, but six of those went for extra bases, including four home runs.

Enjoy!
