Games of the Day

Max Scherzer leads Washington into Philadelphia for the Phillies home opener against Vince Velasquez. In his first two seasons with the Nationals, Scherzer owns a 34-19 record, .642 along with a 2.88 ERA. He averages 11 strikeouts per nine innings, helping him allow just 341 hits in 457 innings. Velasquez blows away batters with 210 K in 186 2/3 MLB innings. The fans should enjoy the afternoon breezes.

My pick for slugfest of the day goes to the Giants at the Padres, despite playing the game at PETCO Park. Matt Cain takes on Luis Perdomo. Cain, once a Giants ace, owns a 5.70 ERA since the start of 2015. Cain used to give up lots of fly balls without allowing a lot of home runs, but that’s not true any more. Perdomo managed to pitch 146 2/3 innings in his rookie year of 2016 despite a 5.71 ERA. Over 20% of his fly balls left the park, which sort of defeats being a ground ball pitcher.

Finally, Wei-Yin Chen leads the Marlins into New York to face the Mets and Zach Wheeler. Chen made the move from a good home run park in Baltimore to a poor home run park in Miami, and his home run rate went up! Wheeler last started in the majors in 2014. It took him a very long time to recover from Tommy John surgery. He struck out a ton of batters in his first two years. Wheeler walked seven and struck out seven in 12 1/3 spring innings, not a good sign.

Enjoy!
