Great Versus Great

There is a chart of the 14 pitch plate appearance between Felix Hernandez and Mike Trout embedded in this article. Trout struck out.

Trout: “He made a great pitch 3-2. He’s a good pitcher. It’s always a battle with him. We have good battles. He’s one of the best in the league so it’s always fun facing him. It’s always a tough battle for everyone. he’s got a bunch of stuff he can get you out with.”

Hernandez: “He was fouling off good pitches. He’s a tough hitter. I tip my cap to him. But I made a good pitch at the end to get him out.”

Hernandez get ahead 0-2 with pitches high on the edges of the plate, first outside, then inside. It appears that Hernandez was able to somewhat fool Trout on low pitches. Trout fouled off four pitches that appear to be below the strike zone, pitch 12 especially costing Trout a walk. He finally struck out looking on a pitch mid height on the inside corner. Note that only pitch eight was fully in the strike zone.

The Angels beat the Mariners 5-4.
