Lessons from the West

The Indians beat the Rangers in their opening game, coming back from an early 5-1 deficit to take the game 8-5. Cleveland looked like a team with a relentless offense coming into the season, and that’s how they won Monday night. They waiting out Yu Darvish for five walks, then hit the weak spot in the Rangers bullpen. Their big off-season acquisition, Edwin Encarnacion, singled, homered and scored twice.

Both Felix Hernandez and Dallas Keuchel appeared to have solved their 2016 problems. Hernandez walked none and struck out six in five innings. He allowed two solo home runs, but pitched well enough to win the game given the potential of the Seattle offense. Dallas Keuchel, however, allowed just two hits in seven innings, both singles, and the Mariners offense managed just three singles and four walks on the evening as Houston took the first game 3-0. I would say that game is actually good news for both teams.

Mike Trout is still great as he drove in both Angels runs with a homer, and also doubled. Khris Davis and Stephen Vogt combined for three home runs, Davis hitting two, as the Athletics win 4-2. Kendall Graveman pitched well against Ricky Nolasco, who might be the worst opening day starter the Angels ever sent to the mound. I suspect the strategy against the Angels should be to shut down the rest of the team, and then Trout can’t do that much damage.

We wound up opening day with four players hitting two home runs each. Not a bad way to start the season. We’ll see if Detroit and Chicago can add to that this afternoon.
