Mixing Up Pineda

I was listening the Yes broadcast when Michael Pineda was working on his outstanding performance earlier today. The Yankees announcers, including David Cone, credited the performance with Pineda doing a better job of mixing up his pitches, being less predictable. There was some thought that catcher Austin Romine was doing a good job of calling the game. At the start of the sixth or the seventh, Pineda struck out the lead-off batter going fast ball, change, fast ball, change, fast ball. The next batter came up looking for a first-pitch fastball, and Pineda threw a slider. The batter nearly screwed himself into the ground. The Yankees have to hope Pineda learned something today that he can use to stay at this level.

He would up giving up two hits and one run, a home run while striking out 11 in 7 2/3 innings. The Yankees beat the Rays 8-1.
