The Astros defeated the Royals 5-4 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon, thanks in part to the pitching of Chris Devenski. Lance McCullers made the start, and struck out 10 in seven innings of work without walking a batter. Devenski came on for the ninth and gave up a two-out home run to blow the save. Devenski’s is a long reliever, so he stayed in and finished the game, striking out seven in his four innings on the mound. In his other relief appearance this season, he struck out seven in four innings. The Astros may have found a new type of relief pitcher, the long man who can throw gas like a closer.
George Springer hit his third lead-off home run of the season, the first person to hit three in a team’s first seven games.
The Royals did not draw a walk, but their pitchers walked eight. In the Royals first series against the Twins, I noted the high number of walks the Twins drew. I was attributing that to Minnesota, but they only drew five walks in their series against the White Sox, while the Royals walked 13 Astros.
