Hair Leverage

Andrew Cashner is using facial hair as a bargaining chip:

Marlins pitcher Andrew Cashner recently indicated that he would be interested in re-signing with Miami as a free agent if the organization gets rid of its no-beard policy.

Cashner, who sported a thick beard for years with the Padres before being traded to Miami this season, told the Miami Herald that the Marlins’ facial-hair rule “is a big deal to me in free agency.”

This seems to me as if Cashner is generating an excuse if he doesn’t wind up signing with the Marlins. Up until this season, Cashner owned excellent walk numbers, but they usually didn’t translate into a great ERA. I’m not sure how many teams are going to be interested in a 30-year-old pitcher whose strength is in decline.
