Mike Leake and Max Scherzer pitch in the finale of the Cardinals series at the Nationals. Leake started his season with an excellent start, lasting eight innings while allowing a run and striking out six. He took the loss, however. Scherzer lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs for the win, the Phillies not getting their first hit of the game until the fourth inning. Scherzer is very good at taking innings to allow his first hit.
Amir Garrett takes on Ivan Nova in a battle of 0.00 ERA pitchers as Cincinnati plays at Pittsburgh. Garrett started his major league career well, allowing no runs, two hits, and two walks in six innings to start the season. Nova did allow a run in his six innings of work, but it was unearned. He walked none and struck out six.
The Brewers finish their series with the Blue Jays as Chase Anderson battles Marcus Stroman. Anderson held the Rockies to one run on three hits in Milwaukee in his first start. He did allow a home run, which was his weakness in 2016. Stroman struck out 300 and walked just 90 in his 63 MLB appearances.
