Wednesday produced just seven runs a game, and so far the 2017 season hasn’t produced much action. Scoring dropped every day this week, starting off with a good 9.3 runs per game on Sunday, to 8.3 runs per game on Monday, 7.4 runs per game on Tuedays, and 7.0 runs per game Wednesday. One would think that opening day should feature the best pitchers, so runs per game should be rising as well go through the first week of the season. On Wednesday, there were three shutouts, and six losing teams were held to one run. Only three games were competitive with a high number of runs. Washington beat Miami 6-4, Cleveland scored five runs in the ninth to pass Texas 9-6, and Arizona took the Giants 8-6. The Red Sox and Pirates took a scoreless tie into extra innings, Boston winning 3-0 on a Sandy Leon home run. The Braves and Mets took a 1-1 tie into extra innings, Atlanta winning 3-1.
It’s still early, but the trend is in the wrong direction.
