The Third Out is the Toughest

The Diamondbacks stage a two-out, two run rally in the bottom of the ninth to hang a loss on the Giants and a blown save on the high price closer Mark Melancon. Jeff Mathis doubled with two out to start the comeback, his third hit on the day. Mathis missed the cycle by a home run. A pinch runner scored the tying run on a Daniel Descalso single, and A.J. Pollock picked up his third hit of the day to put Descalso in scoring position, where he scored on a Chris Owings single.

The Giants bullpen wasted a good Madison Bumgarner start, and an even better day at the plate by the pitcher. He walked and homered twice. The Arizona bullpen didn’t exactly cover itself in glory, but they walked away with the W.

Zack Greinke worked inefficiently in the game, throwing 92 pitches in five innings. He allowed two runs, walking two, striking out four, and allowing one of the Bumgarner home runs.
