Team Offense, Boston Red Sox

The 2018 series on team offense continues with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox finished tenth in the major leagues and sixth in the American League in 2017 with 4.85 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Alex Cora order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

Best lineup: 5.42
Probable lineup: 5.37
Worst lineup: 5.15
Regressed lineup: 4.84

The first thing I noticed is that Christian Vazquez is projected to be the poorest hitter in the lineup, and Cora bats him eighth, right where he should be. Cora and the LAT agree on a number of sections of the lineup, if not the exact order. The LAT likes Rafael Devers and Mitch Moreland batting behind Martinez, but flips them compared to Cora. the LAT likes Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, and Xander Bogaerts together. Cora slots them 1,2,3, respectively, while the LAT puts them 2,1,9. There is very good agreement here.

The big takeaway, however, is that Martinez adds a ton of runs to this order. The team may jump as much as half a run per game if this group plays up to projections. The lineup comes very close to the projections for the Astros and Yankees. Expect to see a lot of players crossing the plate at Fenway this season.

You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.
