The Closing Window

John Gibbons is already taking questions about the future demise of the Blue Jays, prompting a story about closing windows of opportunity for some teams:

The Blue Jays want to build on last year’s success, while the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals hope 2015 was an aberration. All three teams are trying to keep their championship windows open, and it isn’t easy.

It strikes me that the Nationals are not quite in the same boat as the Blue Jays and Tigers. The stars of the Nationals, Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon, are still young. It’s quite possible that with both healthy, they could combine for 15 WAR. Add another potential 10 from a combined Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, and the rest of the roster would need to produce 15 to 20 WAR to get the team into the playoffs. The window is only appears to be closing due possible free agency by Harper in two years. The Nationals could bite the bullet and sign Harper to a 15 year, $500 million extension, and then they’ll have a ten year window. It’s much easier to move in pieces around Harper than to try to replace Jose Bautista or Miguel Cabrera.
