Games of the Day

The Rays and Blue Jays get the day started with Alex Cobb taking on Marco Estrada. Cobb makes his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery. So far he showed great control, walking just one batters in eleven innings. Estrada’s ERA is about a quarter of a run lower at home, but his record is 3-6 in Toronto, 5-2 away.

Jon Lester takes on Carlos Martinez as the Cubs finish their series against the Cardinals. A Cubs win assures them of at least a tie for the division championship. A Cubs win and a Mets loss puts the Cubs in the playoffs. Lester is in the Cy Young award mix, and a great start can move him close to the leaders, including his teammate Kyle Hendricks. Lester stands 7-0 with a 1.65 ERA since the ASB, with 63 strikeouts in 65 innings. Martinez’s walks and home runs are right in line with his 2015 season, but his strikeouts are way down. Despite that, his ERA is very similar.

The Dodgers and Yankees play the rubber game of their interleague series with Clayton Kershaw facing Michael Pineda. Both pitchers strikeout over ten batters per nine innings this season. The difference is that Kershaw’s strikeout lead to few hits, while Pineda gives up a ton of hits despite the Ks. Kerhsaw is also much better at limiting walks and keeping the ball in the park.

The Orioles try to pull within one game of the Red Sox with Kevin Gausman battling Rick Porcello. Gausman pitched poorly against Boston twice this season, giving up 11 runs and four home runs in nine innings. Porcello stands undefeated at home, 13-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 14 starts. He pitched poorly in his one start against the Orioles, allowing three home runs in six innings.

Finally, the Rangers send Yu Darvish against the Astros and Joe Musgrove. Darvish blows away batters with 103 K in 82 1/3 innings. Despite a 2.72 ERA on the road, he has yet to win away this season. Musgrove stands 2-4 in his rookie year. He posts great strikeout and walk numbers, but allowed eight home runs in 43 1/3 innings.

Enjoy!
