Games of the Day

The Cardinals and Reds get things started with Carlos Martinez facing rookie Tim Adleman. Martinez is two wins away from matching his 14-7 record of 2015. Despite a drop in his strikeout rate, Martinez’s ERA is only 0.06 runs higher. Adleman averaged five innings in his first seven MLB starts, his biggest weakness the home run ball. Most of the damage against him came with the bases empty, one reason his ERA isn’t above 4.00.

The slugfest of the day may take place in Baltimore where the Orioles go for a sweep of the Yankees. Michael Pineda takes on Wade Miley. Pineda allowed 64 extra base hits this season, 22 of them home runs. He gives up fewer home runs on the road, but many more doubles. Miley allowed 24 home runs this season, and six in 29 innings since joining the Orioles.

The Giants try for a split with the Cubs as veterans Johnny Cueto and John Lackey square off. Cueto’s home runs allowed are down this season due to his new home park. Eleven of his 14 home runs came in road games. Lackey only made three starts in August, but the down time helped as he posted a 1.66 ERA in 21 2/3 innings, striking out 19 and walking two.

Enjoy!
