Games of the Day

The Astros and Indians finish up their series with a noon EDT start as David Paulino faces Trevor Bauer. Paulino makes his major league debut. He is seasonal age 22 with just 14 innings at AAA. He did strike out 20 batters in those 14 innings, and his career minor league K per 9 IP stands at 10.0, with just 2.3 BB per nine allowed. He’s had an interesting history, missing a season due to Tommy John surgery and serving a team suspension earlier in 2016. At 6′ 7″, think of him as a skinning Michael Pineda. Bauer goes for his 11th win, which would match his 2015 total. He improved on his home runs allowed from 2015, which knocked his ERA down from 4.55 to 3.70.

The Rays pull into New York for a four-game series against the Yankees as Alex Cobb takes on CC Sabathia. This is New York’s “game in hand”, as in “you can make up the wins, but you can’t make up the losses.” After today, the Yankees and the three teams ahead of them in the AL East will all have 23 games to play. Cobb makes his second start after returning from Tommy John surgery. He pitched well his first time out, walking one and striking out seven in five innings. Sabathia is 1-0 against the Rays this season, but with a 5.06 ERA. He only pitched 10 2/3 innings in the two starts, walking six and allowing six runs.

Enjoy!
