Jim Joyce has a reputation as a great umpire, but he just screwed up again royally. The Indians had the bases loaded in the bottom of the third with two out. On a pitch to Lonnie Chisenhall, he checks his swing and fouls off the ball. Joyce, at the plate, does not see the foul ball and does not call a strike. The runner on third advances to the plate, while catcher Jason Castro argues with Joyce. Joyce then calls time out in the middle of what should be a live play as the runner from second scores. The third runner cannot score at that point, even though no one has gone after the ball.
Joyce then calls the umpiring crew together, and none of them saw the foul ball. So the wild pitch stands. They do a review, however, to see how many runs should have scored, and the Indians get just one run because the second run had not scored when time was called!
I think it’s time to drop the Jim Joyce is a great umpire line. He has now committed two major gaffes. He may be a consistently good umpire, but there’s no way he’s a great one.
The Indians lead the Astros 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
