Foul Shift

The shift hurts the Marlins in an unexpected way. With Adam Eaton on first and no one out in the bottom of the first, the Marlins shifted everyone right, so that the third baseman was next to second base. On the first pitch, Harper popped a ball foul down the leftfield line. The third baseman raced over, slid and got a glove on the ball, but in fell for strike one. If the team is not shifted, the shortstop makes that catch easily. Harper fouls off a few more pitches before pulling a line double into the rightfield corner for an RBI. Harper then scores on a single to center, surprising the centerfielder that he was going. The shift cost the Marlins two runs. The Nationals lead the Marlins 3-2.
