How Unearned

Three errors by the Pirates led to the Cubs scoring six unearned runs in the second inning of this afternoon’s game between the clubs. The first error came with two out, so in terms of unearned runs it was the only error that mattered. Between the first and last two errors, Jameson Taillon allowed four hits, intentionally walked a batter, and hit a batter. One of those hits was a double by Jon Lester, following the first error (two bases) and an intentional walk. In other words, they defense made a mistake, but Taillon pitched extremely poorly after the miscue. Sometimes, the unearned runs don’t tell the whole story.

The Cubs beat the Pirates 10-0, but Lester went just two inning as he hurt a hamstring running the bases.
