Verlander to the Astros

Tigers star Justin Verlander wound up with the Houston Astros at the last minute:

1. The Tigers will reportedly send $8 million in each of the next two years to cover a portion of Verlander’s $28 million contract. The amount the Tigers would pay has long been a point of contention in negotiations dating back to July. In essence, the more the Tigers covered, the more they wanted back in return.

This move isn’t unprecedented, as the Tigers also covered $6 million annually of Prince Fielder‘s salary in the Ian Kinsler trade.

2. The Tigers are receiving three of the Astros’ top 10 prospects: right-handed pitcher Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers. On paper, it’s the best return of any of the three trades they’ve made this summer.

Verlander pitched very well in his last 11 starts, which probably pushed the Astros to give up their prospects.

Franklin Perez played 2017 as a 19-year-old, and pitched 32 innings at AA. He has very good three-true outcome numbers for a young pitcher, and is rising quickly.

I don’t quite see why Daz Cameron would attract much interest. He gets on base and developed some power this season, but your really want prospects to be destroying minor league pitching.

Rogers also saw his slugging percentage increase this year with a move to A Ball, suggesting to me that Quad Cities might be a good place to hit.

All three are young enough to have plenty of upside, but the only one I would be excited about is Perez.

So Houston gave up a great pitching prospect to win now. Given that they never won a World Series, they needed add depth to their rotation for the post-season. I love it when teams go all in like this.
