Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I recently updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.
For 2017, I am just going to publish the Log5 hit averages and the NN probabilities with parks factored in. I am keeping track of the results here. I added a graph that gives a visual representation of the probability and success each day. The sheet also includes a table that summarizes the length of positive and negative streaks.
First, the Log5 Method picks:
0.324 — Daniel Murphy batting against Matt Harvey
0.319 — Eric Hosmer batting against Dylan Covey
0.314 — Lorenzo Cain batting against Dylan Covey
0.313 — Howie Kendrick batting against Matt Harvey
0.310 — Whit Merrifield batting against Dylan Covey
0.309 — Melky Cabrera batting against Dylan Covey
0.306 — Trea Turner batting against Matt Harvey
0.298 — Jose Altuve batting against Bud Norris
0.294 — Eddie Rosario batting against Matt Boyd
0.294 — Ryan Zimmerman batting against Matt Harvey
0.294 — Adam Lind batting against Matt Harvey
The Mets are doing something strange today where they are starting Noah Syndergaard, but he is only going to pitch an inning. Matt Harvey comes in for the rest of the game (or however long he lasts). So I’m using Harvey in the calculation.
Here is how the NN with Park ranks the players:
0.298, 0.754 — Jose Altuve batting against Bud Norris.
0.324, 0.752 — Daniel Murphy batting against Matt Harvey.
0.319, 0.732 — Eric Hosmer batting against Dylan Covey.
0.286, 0.732 — Dee Gordon batting against Taijuan Walker.
0.306, 0.731 — Trea Turner batting against Matt Harvey.
0.314, 0.729 — Lorenzo Cain batting against Dylan Covey.
0.287, 0.729 — Eduardo Nunez batting against Robert Stephenson.
0.282, 0.726 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Jhoulys Chacin.
0.313, 0.726 — Howie Kendrick batting against Matt Harvey.
0.310, 0.724 — Whit Merrifield batting against Dylan Covey.
0.309, 0.722 — Melky Cabrera batting against Dylan Covey.
Murphy is the consensus first pick.
Given the poor performance of the NN late in the season compared to the middle of the season, I wonder if I should build in a parameter that indicates how far the season progressed? That will be an improvement project for this winter.
As always, your best pick will fail to get a hit about 25% of the time.
Here is the daily list of active streaks of plate appearances without a hit, with pitchers eliminated:
Good luck!
