Weekly Look at Offense

Offense slowed in week 21, as games produced just 8.39 runs per game, the lowest scoring week of the season. For the season, 2018 produced 8.89 runs per game compared to 9.32 runs per game through 21 full weeks in 2017. (All comparisons are through 21 weeks.) Over the last four seasons, week 21 tends to be low scoring, but 2018 was extreme. The good news is that batters are putting the ball in play more, as hits exceeded strikeouts last week 1655 to 1642. Pundits gnash their teeth over the high number of strikeouts, but the batter actually appear to be adjusting. Despite that, batters in MLB games are reaching base 24.2 times per game versus 24.7 times per game in 2017.
