Fire Dave Martinez

The Nationals lose two out of three to the Marlins this weekend, blowing a chance to reduce their deficit in the NL East to five games. They lost yesterday because Daniel Murphy played poorly defesnively at second base yesterday, and they lost today because Gio Gonzalez allowed 14 batters to reach base by a hit or a walk in 4 2/3 innings. The offense managed just two hits against Jose Urena, who pitches the first complete game of his career. He came into the game with a 4.72 career ERA.

Alex Cora, Aaron Boone, and Gabe Kapler were all given very good teams for their first managerial assignments, and all have their charges in playoff contention. The Nationals looked like one of the top teams in the NL coming into the season, they have top notch stars in Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, and Max Scherzer, but they just can’t put together a solid winning streak, let alone beat one of the worst teams in the league. Something needs to shake them up before it’s too late.

I don’t think Dave Martinez is a bad manager. He clearly cares about his players, is willing to try different things, and injuries have hurt his cause. Maybe it’s time to bring in Bo Porter, or maybe even Jayson Werth, someone who would be less empathetic and more hard nosed.

Either than or fire Mike Rizzo for his inability to put together a good bullpen.
