Games of the Day

The Yankees and Astros play the rubber game of their weekend series as Luis Severino faces Mike Fiers. Severino has now pitched 23 more innings than in 2016 with one fewer walk, one fewer home run, and 41 more strikeouts. That helped drop his ERA from 5.83 to 3.15. Fiers owns a 3.98 ERA despite allowing 18 home runs in 83 2/3 innings. Fifteen of those home runs were solo shots, and 25 of his 32 extra base hits allowed came with the bases empty. The other three home runs came with one man on, so he really limited the damage from the long ball.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks play the rubber game of their important NL West series as well. German Marquez takes on Taijuan Walker. Marquez and Walker, despite playing in home run parks, both limited long balls this season. Marquez allowed just six home runs in 63 2/3 innings, and only two on the road. Walker allowed five in 69 1/3 innings, fairly evenly split with three at home and two on the road.

Finally, the Sunday night game features the best pitching match-up of the day as Max Scherzer leads the Nationals against Carlos Martinez and the Cardinals. Scherzer saw his total number of strikeouts rise in each of the last five seasons, from 174 in 2011 to 284 in 2016. With 151 K at the half-way point, Scherzer might reach 300 this season. Martinez is no slouch with the K, with 121 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings in 2017. He owns a 1.85 ERA at home this season. That’s fourth best in the majors.

Enjoy!
