Terry Pluto details the unlikely paths to the All-Star game of four of the Indians five honorees.
Kluber was in Class AA at the age of 24. He was not even ranked among Baseball America’s top 30 prospects with the Padres.
The Indians saw a big right-hander (6-foot-4, 225 pounds). He had a 6-6 record and a 3.45 ERA in the Texas League.
As Antonetti told me, the Indians liked the fact that Kluber was averaging 10 strikeouts compared to 2.9 walks per nine innings. He also led the league in strikeouts. The Indians even included $2.7 million in the deal to help pay for Westbrook’s salary in 2010.
So they did like Kluber.
That was back in 2010. I think more teams today would have an eye on Kluber with those stats.
