Weekly Look at Offense

Through 14 weeks of the season, the 2017 and and 2016 seasons are much closer than they’ve been earlier in the season. Weeks 13 and 14 saw offense drop in 2017 to around 9.15 runs per game, while in 2016, offense surged. Week 14 was almost identical in the two years. The upshot is that 2017 now leads 2016 through the same time period 9.33 runs per game to 9.01 runs per game.

Home runs are no up just 0.2 per game, 2.52 in 2017 to 2.31 in 2016. Walks remain up about 0.3 per game and there are 0.5 more Ks per game. Other hits are down about 0.3, so the increase in men on base is totally due to the higher number of home runs. Maybe the latest batch of balls isn’t as lively as the one earlier in the season, or maybe pitchers are figuring out how to keep the ball in the park.
