Jon Lester makes the worst start of his career in the first inning against the Pirates, giving up ten runs in 2/3 of an inning. Only four of them are earned, as Lester allows six hits, three walks, and two home runs to the Pirates. On July 22, 2012, Lester allowed 11 runs, all earned, in four innings, the only other time he allowed at least ten runs in a game. Lester’s ERA jumps to 4.25. Note that some of the runs became unearned because the opposing pitcher sacrificed for the second out after an error earlier in the inning. Lester just pitched poorly.
The Pirates lead the Cubs 10-0 in the top of the second.
