What a Drag

Alan Nathan performs his own analysis of the current MLB baseball and finds that the current ball exhibits less drag than the early 2015 ball, but that there is no difference between the 2016 and 2017 balls. In other words, there was a change in the ball after the 2015 All-Star break, but the 2017 home run surge is on top of that change, not due to additional change. It could be that batters after a year realized they were playing with a ball that carried farther, and swung to take advantage of that extra carry.
