Doing it For Dick

Dick Enberg received a lifetime achievement award today in Detroit, and is broadcasting the Tigers games this weekend as part of the festivities. The Dodgers and Tigers are turning back the clock as well, as they have played the first nine half innings in about one hour and ten minutes. Both pitchers, Justin Verlander and Kenta Maeda are working on no-hitters. Verlander walked Yasiel Puig in the top of the fifth, the only runner in the game so far. We’ll see how this game plays out, but it’s starting off as a very special one.

There’s no score in the bottom of the fifth, and due to the walk, Kate Upton still won’t let Verlander into the perfect game club.

Update: Maeda retires the Tigers in order for the fifth time and remains perfect. Maeda struck out six so far, Verlander eight. Both have pitch counts in the low 60s.

Update: Curtis Granderson battles Verlander with two out in the sixth inning, and hits the rightfield foul pole for a home run. That ends Verlander’s no-hit bid. It was Granderson’s first hit as a Dodgers player.

Update: John Hicks lines a single to leftfield leading off the bottom of the sixth, and Maeda’s perfect game is over.
