Games of the Day

The Yankees and Red Sox play the rubber game of their series with Sonny Gray taking on Rick Porcello. A Boston wins gives the Red Sox a nice five-game cushion going into the last six weeks of the season. A Yankees win means they only need to gain one game every other week to catch Boston. Gary owns a 3.00 ERA in three starts for New York, good for only a 1-2 record. His walks have been a bit high, but he only allowed one home run in 18 innings. Porcello had an interesting couple of months. He went 0-4 in July despite a 3.06 ERA. In August, he is 3-0, but with a 4.91 ERA. It makes one start to believe that pitcher wins and losses are subject to other factors out of the pitcher’s control!

Milwaukee sends Chase Anderson against the Rockies and Kyle Freeland. Anderson showed a great deal of improvement in his home run rate this season, a year when many pitchers are getting hammered. That helped him to a 2.89 ERA in 16 starts. Freeland owns a 3.31 ERA at Coors this season. That’s even more remarkable when you realize he does not strike out many batters, meaning his defense needs to back him up well.

Finally, the Pirates host the Cardinals in Williamsport, and the majors visit the Little League World Series. Mike Leake faces Ivan Nova. Leake allowed 53 hits in 34 1/3 innings since the All-Star break, a .353/.412/.453 opposition slash line. Nova allowed two runs in eight innings against the Cardinals in one start this season, but still lost the game.

Enjoy!
