The Cubs send Kyle Hendricks to the mound against the Phillies and rookie Ben Lively. Last season, some saw Hendricks as the next Greg Maddux. He did a good job of getting first pitch strikes, coming in at 68.6% in 2016. This year that percentage dropped to 61.5%, and his ERA is up about 1.4 runs. Lively is a high contact pitcher, with low strikeout and walk rates. He gives up hits, but so far limited the damage with men on base.
An all-rookies match-up takes place in Atlanta where Kyle Freeland and the Rockies face Sean Newcomb. Freeland upped his K rate since the All-Star break and lowered his ERA by about 0.3 runs. Newcomb is 1-6 at home in eight starts. The 4.43 ERA doesn’t help, but the Braves scored 2 runs or fewer in four of those starts.
Enjoy!
