Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I recently updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.
For 2017, I am just going to publish the Log5 hit averages and the NN probabilities with parks factored in. I am keeping track of the results here. I added a graph that gives a visual representation of the probability and success each day. The sheet also includes a table that summarizes the length of positive and negative streaks.
First, the Log5 Method picks:
0.348 — Daniel Murphy batting against Luis Perdomo
0.336 — Howie Kendrick batting against Luis Perdomo
0.325 — Buster Posey batting against Zach Eflin
0.323 — Gerardo Parra batting against Matt Garza
0.323 — Jean Segura batting against Austin Pruitt
0.321 — Justin Turner batting against Jordan Zimmermann
0.320 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Matt Garza
0.319 — Jose Altuve batting against Sean Manaea
0.315 — Corey Seager batting against Jordan Zimmermann
0.310 — Ryan Zimmerman batting against Luis Perdomo
Kendrick turned out to be a pretty good pickup for the Nationals. He’s hitting .353/.400/.667 since joining the team, a little better than his numbers with Philadelphia. In his two seasons in the majors, Perdomo allowed a .302 BA. That ties him with Kyle Gibson for highest in the majors among pitchers who faced at least 1100 batters. So it’s a good day to pick Nationals hitters.
Here is how the NN with Park ranks the players:
0.348, 0.775 — Daniel Murphy batting against Luis Perdomo.
0.319, 0.769 — Jose Altuve batting against Sean Manaea.
0.320, 0.759 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Matt Garza.
0.323, 0.757 — Gerardo Parra batting against Matt Garza.
0.336, 0.748 — Howie Kendrick batting against Luis Perdomo.
0.323, 0.747 — Jean Segura batting against Austin Pruitt.
0.307, 0.746 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Matt Garza.
0.315, 0.737 — Corey Seager batting against Jordan Zimmermann.
0.321, 0.737 — Justin Turner batting against Jordan Zimmermann.
0.325, 0.737 — Buster Posey batting against Zach Eflin.
Murphy is the unanimous choice, with Kendrick and Parra tied for consensus second choice.
As always, your best pick will fail to get a hit about 25% of the time.
Here is the daily list of active streaks of plate appearances without a hit, with pitchers eliminated:
Good luck!
