A Rowdy Finish

Rowdy Tellez posted a 3 for 4 game Saturday for the Blue Jays, raising his BA to .403. That’s the highest BA this season with a minimum of 30 plate appearances.

In 1957, Bob Hazel hit .403 in 134 at bats, the most AB for someone hitting .400 since Ted Williams in 1941. Since that time, only nine players have recorded a .400 BA in a season with at least 40 AB. The last was Glenn Williams who went 17 for 40 in 2005, his only 40 at bats in the majors.

Right behind Tellez sits Aramis Garcia, batting .368 in 38 AB. What is incredibly interesting about these two hitters is that they are recording high batting averages while striking out a ton. Tellez struck out 12 times already. Tellez struck out 12 times in 48 PA, which would prorate out to 150 K in 600 PA. Garcia struck out 18 times in 38 PA, which would prorate out to 284 K in 600 PA. The two are just smacking the ball when they hit it. Twelve of Tellez’s 19 hits have gone for extra bases. Imagine what these two would hit if they put the ball in play more.

Before we get too excited, however, we should note that these high BAs are totally out of line with their minor league numbers. Tellez did develop power at AA last season, and he’s young enough to still be improving. But their high K rates and lack of selectivity probably doom them to a fate similar to Glenn Williams.
