Ohtani Under the Knife

Shohei Ohtani will have Tommy John surgery next week:

The Angels first recommended that Ohtani receive Tommy John earlier this month after an MRI exam revealed new damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching (right) elbow. Undergoing the surgery now will likely sideline Ohtani from the mound until the 2020 season, but it remains to be seen just how much he will hit. Ohtani could theoretically return next season and log significant time as the Angels’ designated hitter while still allowing his elbow to recover for an eventual return to the mound.

Ohtani should give up the two-way player option. He’s a fine hitter, and worth the money on that side of the ball. Let him and just hit and have a longer career.
