Massive Tie Scenario

The Rockies keep winning, and the chance of three way tie in the Wild West race improves. Colorado pounded the Phillies 10-1 Monday night to keep pace with the Dodgers, who beat the Diamondbacks 7-4. The Cardinals lost to the Brewers 6-4, so the Rockies are even with St. Louis in the AFILC. The probability of a three-way tie between the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Rockies stands at 0.0455, pretty close to 1 in 20. The most likely number of wins for a tie would be 90, or the Dodgers going 2-3, the Cardinals going 3-2, and the Rockies going 4-2.

While not part of a massive tie, the Cubs lost to the Pirates 5-1, so the Brewers are now 1 1/2 games back in the NL Central, but the Cubs have the game in hand. So the possibility exists for tie between the Cubs and Brewers for the NL Central title and a three-way tie for the Wild West. The beneficiary of that would be the Braves, who would wait while the other five teams burn out their starting rotations.

For today, the best outcomes for the three-way tie would be:

  • The Cardinals defeat the Brewers.
  • The Rockies beat the Phillies.
  • The Dodgers fall to the Diamondbacks.

That would tie all three teams in the loss column.
