It was a good night for the Massive Tie Scenario in the NL Wild West race. The Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 6-2 behind an outstanding performance by German Marquez. He allowed two runs in seven innings, striking out eleven batters without a walk. The Cardinals defeated the Giants 5-3 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth, Matt Adams breaking a 3-3 tie with a two-run double. The Dodgers fell to the Padres 5-3 as a late comeback attempt fell short.
That gives the Dodgers and Cardinals the same record, 85-69, with the Rockies 83-70, 1 1/2 games back. The probability of a three-way now stands at 0.0315, the highest it’s been since I started tracking this one week ago. The most likely win total for a tie remains at 89. The Rockies play their game-in-hand Thursday, so by then we’ll know if there is a good chance of this tie happening.
For today, Colorado needs a win against Arizona, and both the Dodgers losing to San Diego and the Cardinals losing to the Giants would do the most to increase the probability of a tie. The Rockies winning is the most important step, however.
