Sliding Down the Banister

The Rangers fired Jeff Banister and temporarily replaced him with Don Wakamatsu. I’m a bit surprised, as the Banister was considered a manager who bought into the modern front office use of analytical methods, and like Clint Hurdle, was good at getting players to use the information as well. It may very well have been how he handled players. Some managers are good at the Xs and Os, some at keeping the clubhouse happy. Joe Torre and Don Zimmer worked well together as Torre took care of the people, his strength, and Zimmer took care of the strategy, his strength.

It’s also something managers learn over time. Buck Showalter appears to be a lot better now on the people side of managing than he was early on. I suspect Bannister will get another job.
