Changing the Score

I noticed on the live scoreboard I watch that Toronto took a 4-3 lead over the Rays in the top of the ninth. A minute later, I noticed the game was final, with the Rays winning 3-2. This is what happened:

Up 3-2 in the 9th inning, the Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out with Edwin Encarnacion at the plate. He hit a groundball to Evan Longoria who tried to start a 5-4-3 double-play to end the game. However, Logan Forsythe threw the ball away on the turn and the Jays took a 4-3 lead.

Or so it seemed.

Replays clearly showed that Jose Bautista reached out with his left arm and grabbed the leg of Forsythe as he was throwing the ball.

Bautista was called for interference, the Rays were award a double play. That ended the game.

There is a gif at the link. I don’t think the slide was bad, but grabbing the leg turned it into an interference call. Nice try by Jose, but it’s tough to get away with that in the era of the instant replay.

Corey Dickerson hit his second home run in as many games. So far he looks like a great acquisition for Tampa Bay.
