The last six teams open the season today.
Boston and Cleveland try to play Tuesday after a postponement Monday. David Price takes on Corey Kluber in Cleveland. Price posted the highest WAR of his career in 2015, but knocked around in the playoffs. Kluber’s 2015 season was similar to his 2014 season, but with nearly the opposite record. He went from 18-9 in 2014 to 9-18 in 2015. His home run rate went up, but he also went from a .207/.277/.284 slash line allowed in 2014 with runners in scoring position to .265/.350/.444. That’s a big reason his ERA went up a run.
The Astros and Yankees will play a cold home opener after weather prevented them from playing on Monday. Dallas Keuchel face Masahiro Tanaka. Keuchel is developing a reputation as a Yankees killer. In three regular season starts against New York he holds a 1.12 ERA, with one walk and 26 strikeouts in 24 innings. He also threw six shutout innings against New York in the playoffs, walking one and striking out seven. Tanaka showed impressive control in his first two seasons in the majors, walking just 48 batters in 290 1/3 innings. His aim for 2016 is to keep that rate for 30+ starts.
The Tigers open against the Marlins in Miami with Justin Verlander battling Wei-Yin Chen. Verlander only made 20 starts in 2015 due to a triceps injury, but finished strong in his last 11 starts. Chen moves from the Orioles to the Marlins after posting the best ERA of his career. I suspect the ball park in Miami, despite being reconfigured, will help with his home runs allowed.
Enjoy!
